SUMMARY:First Thursday Films presents: "Nope"
DESCRIPTION:Oscar® winner Jordan Peele disrupted and redefined modern horror with Get Out and then Us. Now\, he reimagines the summer movie with a new pop nightmare: the expansive horror epic\, Nope. \nThe film reunites Peele with Oscar® winner Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out\, Judas and the Black Messiah)\, who is joined by Keke Palmer (Hustlers\, Alice) and Oscar® nominee Steven Yeun (Minari\, Okja) as residents in a lonely gulch of inland California who bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery. \n‘Nope’ Review: Hell Yes. \nEvery genre Peele invokes is a flytrap for social meanings\, and you can’t watch this cowboys-and-aliens monster movie without entertaining some deep thoughts about race\, ecology\, labor and the toxic\, enchanting power of modern popular culture.  — A.O. SUMMARY:First Thursdays: "Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power"
DESCRIPTION:The passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 represented not the culmination of the Civil Rights Movement\, but the beginning of a new\, crucial chapter. Nowhere was this next battle better epitomized than in Lowndes County\, Alabama\, a rural\, impoverished town with a vicious history of racist terrorism. In a town that was eighty percent Black but had zero Black voters\, laws were just paper without power. This isn’t a story of hope but of action. Through first person accounts and searing archival footage\, Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power tells the story of the local movement and young Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) organizers who fought not just for voting rights\, but for Black Power in Lowndes County. \n\n\n\nCome for the movie — and stay for the conversation\, led this month by MSP Film programmer\, Craig Laurence Rice\, with Lowndes County Director\, Sam Pollard.   \nThese conversations at the Capri on the Northside are always thoughtful and dynamic. SUMMARY:First Thursday Films presents "Wattstax"
DESCRIPTION:Staged by Stax Records\, a renowned Southern soul label founded in 1959 in Memphis\, the Wattstax concert drew over 100\,000 predominately African-American Los Angelenos\, who themselves put on an exuberant display — memorably captured by Wattstax — of ’70s funk and soul culture. \nFeaturing incendiary performances by Isaac Hayes\, Albert King\, Rufus and Carla Thomas\, the Staple Singers\, the Emotions\, the Bar-Kays\, and other greats of soul\, R&B\, and gospel– plus biting humor from a then little-known Richard Pryor — Wattstax is more than a concert film. It also captures a heady moment in mid-1970s\, “black-is-beautiful” African-American culture\, when Los Angeles’s black community came together just seven years after the Watts riots to celebrate its survival and a renewed hope in its future. \n\n\n\nCome for the movie — and stay for the conversation\, led this month by MSP Film programmer\, Craig Laurence Rice\, with Gary Hines\, Music Director and Producer of the 3-time\, Grammy Award-Winning Sounds of Blackness. \nThese conversations at the Capri on the Northside are always thoughtful and rich. SUMMARY:First Thursday Films presents "Claudine"
DESCRIPTION:A 1974 heart and soul comedy. Can you dig it? \nDirected by John Barry and starring Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones. \nClaudine (Diahann Carroll) is a single mother in New York City who endures an exhausting commute to the suburbs where she works as a maid for wealthy families. In one carefully tended white community\, she meets Roop (James Earl Jones)\, a charismatic but irresponsible garbage collector. Romance quickly ensues\, but Claudine doubts that their relationship is good for her six children\, and Rupert\, despite his good nature\, is reluctant to take on fatherhood. \n“…Claudine boasts performances that leave impressions upon the heart long after the film is over.”  Imran Kahn\, popmatters.com \n“Claudine\, despite its seemingly modest story\, budget\, and scale\, was something of a revolutionary film\, one that took the basic template of the romantic comedy and used it to explore the lived experiences of a single Black mother trying to make it financially\, emotionally\, and romantically in Harlem. The film deals directly with issues of female sexuality\, motherhood\, economic disparities and the so-called “welfare state\,” and the struggles of being Black in the immediate post-Civil Rights era—all topics that were largely left off the Hollywood screen.”  James Kendrick\, Network Film Desk \nDiahann Carroll – Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role \nNAACP Image Awards: Diahann Carroll: Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture; James Earl Jones: Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture \n\n\n\nCome for the movie — and stay for the conversation\, led this month by MSP Film programmer\, Craig Laurence Rice\, and Natalie Morrow\, Founder/CEO of the Twin Cities Black Film Festival. \nThese conversations at the Capri on the Northside are always thoughtful and rich.
