SUMMARY:MSPIFF @ the Capri: "Buladó" 4:30pm\, 5/18
DESCRIPTION:Age 11+\, coming of age drama \nOn the island coast of Curaçao\, 11-year-old Kenza lives on a plot of land that has been with their family for generations. As Kenza approaches adolescence\, she longs for the mother she never knew. Meanwhile\, her father and grandfather clash over the future of their family’s land and ancestry. Kenza’s strict dad is a policeman\, assimilated to Dutch ways. However\, her grandfather\, who also cares for her\, is in touch with the spirits of their African and Indigenous ancestors of the Afro Caribbean island. Caught in the middle of their opposing worldviews\, Kenza seeks her own understanding of the mysteries of the world while facing hard truths. \nThis courageous magical-realism coming of age film stands out as a deeper story of navigating between cultures\, spirituality and reason\, and life and death\, based on a legend from the filmmaker’s own mixed heritage. SUMMARY:MSPIFF @ the Capri: "Free Renty: Lanier V. Harvard" 4pm\, 5/15
DESCRIPTION:Director David Grubin Attending \nTamara Lanier’s great-great-great grandfather was an enslaved man named Renty\, who was compelled in 1850 to have his photograph taken so that Harvard Professor Louis Agassiz\, a celebrated scientist — and virulent racist — could “prove” the superiority of the white race. Free Renty: Lanier v. Harvard documents Lanier’s years-long quest to force Harvard to release the daguerreotypes to Renty’s lineal descendants. \nLanier is suing Harvard for “wrongful seizure\, possession and expropriation” of her ancestors’\, Renty and Delia’s\, images. Featuring commentary from her lawyers\, including noted Civil Rights attorney Benjamin Crump\, and scholars including Ta-Nehisi Coates and Tina Campt\, Free Renty is a troubling look at the legacy of slavery and the lengths powerful institutions will go to avoid confronting the past\, as well as a stirring testimony to the courage of those determined to fight for the dignity and respect of their ancestors. \n\nDirector Biography \nDavid Grubin is a director\, writer\, producer\, and cinematographer who has produced films that range across history\, art\, poetry\, and science\, winning every award in the field of documentary television\, including two Alfred I. Dupont awards\, three George Foster Peabody prizes\, five Writer’s Guild prizes\, and ten Emmys. \n\nAll Capri MSPIFF Events \nMSPIFF is Minnesota’s largest film festival and one of the longest-running film festivals in the country. SUMMARY:MSPIFF @ the Capri: "Shaft" 7pm\, 5/12
DESCRIPTION:Post-film discussion featuring MSPIFF Programmer and filmmaker Craig Laurence Rice. \nWhen a Harlem mobster’s daughter is kidnapped by the Mafosi\, does he turn to the cops? Not when Shaft’s in town. Thrilling\, sexy\, and dangerous\, Gordon Parks’ action thriller ushered in the 70s Blaxploitation genre. Richard Roundtree is magnetic as Shaft and Isaac Hayes won an Oscar for the original song. \nThis is a movie that many long-time Northside residents may have seen when it originally played at the Capri back in the early ‘70s. The film is also a part of the MSPIFF41 Luminary Tribute to Gordon Parks which also includes screenings of The Learning Tree\, Leadbelly\, and Half Past Autumn. \n\nDirector Biography \nWhen speaking of Gordon Parks\, one could easily write an entire biography on his work as a pioneering Black photographer working with the New Deal government; or on his fiction\, non-fiction and poetry\, including The Learning Tree; or on his music\, including the scores for his own movies; or on his editorial work or his oil paintings. \nPhoto Courtesy The Gordon Parks Foundation \n\nAll Capri MSPIFF Events \nMSPIFF is Minnesota’s largest film festival and one of the longest-running film festivals in the country. SUMMARY:MSPIFF @ the Capri: "Let the Little Light Shine" 4:30pm\, 5/12
DESCRIPTION:Director Kevin Shaw Attending \nLocated just south of downtown Chicago\, the National Teachers Academy Elementary School (NTA) is a high-achieving public school in an African American neighborhood. When the city announces plans to phase out NTA’s curriculum and turn it into a high school drawing students from other schools\, the community senses gentrification… and\, soon\, the fight for justice is on. \nThe NTA is the pride of its community\, receiving numerous accolades\, including Chicago’s top-ranking recognition for educational achievement and helping Black\, working-class children to achieve success. In 2017\, however\, residents from a nearby gentrifying neighborhood urged the city to turn NTA into a high school that would benefit their children. But NTA’s parents\, teachers\, administrators and students\, who have seen the city administration bypass their best interests for too long\, will have none of it. Kevin Shaw’s documentary is at once an infuriating and hopeful look at a Chicago school that will have you on edge of your seats until the final bell rings. \n\nAll Capri MSPIFF Events \nDirector Biography \nKevin Shaw is a director\, producer and cinematographer\, whose work has appeared on numerous major television networks. He directed the documentary short Jeremiah Strong (2002) and the documentary features The Street Stops Here (2010) and Goose (2012). Let the Little Light Shine (2021) is his most recent documentary. \n\nMSPIFF is Minnesota’s largest film festival and one of the longest-running film festivals in the country. SUMMARY:MSPIFF @ the Capri: "Saloum" 7pm\, 5/11
DESCRIPTION:Bangui’s Hyenas are a fabled trio of mercenaries from Guinea-Bissau\, who strip a drug dealer of his enormous wealth and make a beeline for Dakar. There they get trapped in a near-mythical resort… and the blood is just beginning to flow in Jean Luc Herbulot’s kinetic thriller-horror hybrid. \nAmidst the chaos of a coup d’état\, Bangui’s Hyenas perform an almost perfect siege of a Mexican drug lord\, and flee with millions in drugs and gold. But when they find themselves stranded in the Sine-Saloum Delta\, a coastal river whose archipelago is seemingly filled with unearthly creatures\, the Hyenas find themselves\, and their weaponry\, at a distinct disadvantage. “Freely mixes and marries the cinematic languages of spaghetti Westerns\, samurai dramas and classic monster movies to tell an exciting and distinctly African story.” –Richard Kuipers\, Variety \nDIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY\n  \nJean Luc Herbulot was born in Pointe-Noire\, Republic of Congo and studied multimedia and film editing in Paris. He is the director of the short films “Concurrence loyale” (2009)\, “Stabat Mater” (2011)\, “Sick” (2012)\, “Munster Cake” (2013) and the features Dealer (2014) and Saloum (2021). \n\nAll Capri MSPIFF Events \nMSPIFF is Minnesota’s largest film festival and one of the longest-running film festivals in the country. SUMMARY:MSPIFF @ the Capri: "Beba" 4:30pm\, 5/11
DESCRIPTION:“Every one of us inherits the curses of our ancestors. But we may put an end to this cycle by constantly going to war with ourselves…” So says filmmaker Rebeca “Beba” Huntt in this documentary that will challenge all of your notions of filmmaking\, race and class in America. \nThis poetic and searching autobiography\, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival\, is a fierce examination of class\, family dynamics\, racial and ethnic identity and immigration. It is also a powerfully honest look at the filmmaker herself — Huntt spares no one\, herself least of all. The child of a Dominican father and Venezuelan mother\, immigrants who met in New York\, she grew up in a one-bedroom apartment\, where personalities clashed on a daily basis. As Beba is admitted into Bard College\, she is suddenly thrust into a new world\, as fraught with psychological trauma as the one she left. Beautiful\, thought-provoking and experiential\, Beba heralds the arrival of a major new voice in personal documentary filmmaking. \nDIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY\n  \nBorn and raised in New York City\, Rebeca Huntt is an Afro-Latina filmmaker with a BA from Bard College. She is the director of the documentary short ¡Hay Coro! (2019) and the short 1-800 Lovable. Beba (2021) is her debut documentary feature. \n\nAll Capri MSPIFF Events \nMSPIFF is Minnesota’s largest film festival and one of the longest-running film festivals in the country. SUMMARY:Continuum Center presents: “True North: Science\, Streets\, and Skating Rinks of Optimism”
DESCRIPTION:In the 2013-14 basketball season the Minneapolis North High Polars went from worst to first in the city\, and became state champions in 2016.\nFrom classrooms and living rooms to basketball courts and ice rinks\, “True North” is a story of possibility over probability\, of quantum leaps\, and transforming reality\, from the inside out.\nDoors open at 5:30 | Program at 6:30 | Q & A at 7:45 | Reception following. \n\nMore: The film “True North” follows the journey of the Minneapolis North High Polars basketball team starting in late November 2013\, when the team was in last place in the city. At the same time Minneapolis Public Schools had tried to shut North High down because of their 35% graduation rate\, and because there were only 165 students in the entire school. \nThen\, the team’s new head coach\, Larry McKenzie\, invited Jane Barrash onboard as the vision\, focus and mindset development coach\, with a program to help the players access the proverbial other 90% of brain/mind capacity for sports\, academics\, and life. \nCovering 8 years\, “True North” follows the players as they become state champions\, and then after high school\, also highlighting a couple of Polars in particular (the younger brother a senior and Polar captain by the end of the film) in a family that’s a pillar of North Minneapolis and North High\, and a skating show featuring Polars on the ice with an Edina synchronized skating team. \n“True North” is all about optimism\, interconnectedness\, and creating a new universe of possibility!  Join us!

SUMMARY:Euphoria Short Works Festival
DESCRIPTION:Join gender queer artist Lauren Edson in an exploration of gender euphoria and the gender spectrum. \nWhat exactly is gender euphoria? Simply put\, gender euphoria is the opposite of gender dysphoria. It is the psychological state of bliss and comfort that happens when one’s gender expression aligns with their gender identity. At this moment in the media\, there is so much focus on the negative and the bad\, especially when it comes to gender related topics. Those are most certainly important things to talk about\, but Edson wanted to create a time with their art\, if only for a moment\, where we focus on the positive and the joy surrounding feeling comfortable in your own skin. \nThe show features several incredible Minnesota artists. Hadar Isra will be performing a spoken word piece\, Identity Crisis (C Michael Menge and Chip Gehring) will be doing comedy\, Candy Kuehn will be displaying wearable artwork\, Eden Johnson will be reading poetry\, Annika Hansen will be doing a dance performance\, DIVAJ (Jaye Sinkfield) will be performing an original song\, and Katie Weston will be sharing a short film. \nTeam Euphoria is so excited to showcase all of this hard work and can’t wait to see you at the theater! \nREGISTER TO ATTEND NOW! \nFor more updates on the festival\, you can find Team Euphoria on all social media as @euphoriashortworks or on our website. \nTo learn more about Art to Change the World\, you can find them on social media @artotchangetheworld or check out their website. \n \n \nPlease note: Masks are also required at all indoor events at the Capri.
