SUMMARY:Melanin IN Motion: "Blackwaters: Brotherhood in the Wild"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Black male-exclusive screening of Blackwaters: Brotherhood in the Wild and a guided conversation on Black life with the cast. \nWe are presenting an exclusive screening for Black men and a community conversation with the stars of the film Blackwaters: Brotherhood in the Wild\, hosted by Anthony Taylor of Melanin IN Motion; The Cultural Wellness Center; Phyllis Wheatley Community Center’s Camp Katharine Parsons; Ujamaa Place\, and 100 Black Men Twin Cities. \nBlackwaters encompasses the power of 5 Black men whose paths have been challenged with loss\, defeat\, fear\, pain\, and the social injustices Black men and Black boys face every day. Through surviving life’s trials\, each man has found grace and success in the outdoors\, healed and mended by nature’s medicine\, embracing the art of fly fishing and building brotherhood. The film highlights their journey through the Gates of the Arctic Circle National Park and follows their adventures and dialogue as they learn to hold space in nature as anglers paving the road for the next generation. \nThis event will begin with a light dinner and social hour at 5:30pm at the Capri Theater. \nAs part of “narrative shift” work\, you will meet former leaders and campers from Phyllis Wheatley’s Camp Katharine Parsons\, a Black-owned camp serving Minneapolis Black families dating back to 1957. \nAlthough this is an event designed for Black men\, the cast of Blackwaters will participate in several events in Minneapolis beginning May 16. There are two additional screenings open to all community members at different locations. Thursday night (5/16)\, hosted by the Parks Foundation at the MIA\, and Saturday night (5/18)\, hosted by the University of Minnesota Department of Forest Resources at the Bell Museum. The cast of Blackwaters will be participating in all of the events this weekend\, May 16-18. Learn more on the Minneapolis Parks Foundation website and the U of M’s Forest Resources site. \nMEET THE CAST \nIn collaboration with Fishing For All and Trout Unlimited\, Melanin IN Motion will offer community opportunities to experience fly fishing on Saturday\, May 18. Events and locations will be announced at the Capri screening on Friday night.
