SUMMARY:NOTICE from Stage North: "Ain't Misbehavin'" Postponed to May '23

While this is disappointing\, the company feels that rather than putting up a hastily assembled production\, the show would be best served by a postponement until everyone involved is healthy and available.\n\nThe show\, under the direction of Kelli Foster Warder and musical direction of Sanford Moore\, and the original cast\, will open at the Capri on May 12\, 2023.\n\n\n————————————-\n\nStage North returns to the Capri Theater this fall with the Tony Award-winning hit  Ain’t Misbehavin’\, the Fats Waller musical show\, opening Friday\, September 16 and running through Sunday\, October 9. \nDirected and choreographed by Kelli Foster Warder\, fresh off her highly-acclaimed production of Jelly’s Last Jam at Theatre Latte Da\, and with musical direction by local music legend Sanford Moore\, Ain’t Misbehavin’ brings the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s to life. \nJoin five performers on a journey through the timeless music of Thomas “Fats” Waller. You’ll be jumpin’ and jivin’ with memorable songs such as Honeysuckle Rose\, Ain’t Misbehavin’\, Black and Blue\, This Joint is Jumpin’ and I’ve Got a Feeling I’m Falling. SUMMARY:Big Psych presents: Big Psychedelic Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Join our second annual psychedelic symposium to share knowledge\, reflect on experiences\, and learn from one another. Our focus this year is bringing together diverse approaches to psychedelic exploration so community has the resources to choose their own path. We are big supporters of cultivating a direct relationship with plant medicines\, as to translate and integrate one’s own teachings. Our symposium is a resource for this practice. Trust in your ability to learn\, heal\, and grow. \nCollective progress is supported by acknowledging the many ways of knowing. We support this sentiment by nurturing access to and representations of the cultural\, environmental\, scientific\, spiritual\, and communal explorations of psychedelics. Our symposium supports access to alternative careers and lifestyles\, decreases drug misinformation\, addresses inequities in the psychedelic community\, and grows community involvement in sustainable health and wellness practices. \nTickets support our efforts to build a psychedelic community space\, including the Minnesota Temple of Plant Medicine! \nSee Saturday and Sunday schedules below\, plus workshops HERE. \nQuestions? bigpsychmpls@gmail.com. \n \n

SUMMARY:MSPIFF @ the Capri: "The Gravedigger's Wife" 7pm\, 5/18
DESCRIPTION:Director Khadar Ayderus Ahmed and Actor Omar Abdi Attending \nIn Djibouti City\, Guled literally chases ambulances–he’s a gravedigger who competes with others to procure a cadaver for a meager wage. It’s a living… until his wife\, Nasra\, is diagnosed with kidney failure\, forcing Guled and his young son\, Mahad\, to take desperate measures to raise money for treatment. \nGuled and Nasra are a devoted\, loving couple. Abandoning their villages to run off together to the big city\, they started a family\, and eke out a living with gravedigging and other menial work. But Nasra’s kidney failure weighs heavily on the family\, as it would take an entire year’s pay to even begin the necessary treatment. \nFinnish Somali writer-director Khadar Ayderus Ahmed’s poignant and finely observed film is both a damning critique of the health care system and a portrait of people who exist in love despite hideous circumstances. Official Somali entry for Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards. \n\nDirector Biography \nBorn in Mogadishu\, Somalia\, Khadar Ayderus Ahmed moved to Finland as a refugee when he was 16. He is the director of the short films “Me ei vietetä joulua” (2104)\, “Yövaras” (2017). SUMMARY:MSPIFF @ the Capri: "Free Renty: Lanier V. Harvard" 4pm\, 5/15
DESCRIPTION:Director David Grubin Attending \nTamara Lanier’s great-great-great grandfather was an enslaved man named Renty\, who was compelled in 1850 to have his photograph taken so that Harvard Professor Louis Agassiz\, a celebrated scientist — and virulent racist — could “prove” the superiority of the white race. Free Renty: Lanier v. Harvard documents Lanier’s years-long quest to force Harvard to release the daguerreotypes to Renty’s lineal descendants. \nLanier is suing Harvard for “wrongful seizure\, possession and expropriation” of her ancestors’\, Renty and Delia’s\, images. Featuring commentary from her lawyers\, including noted Civil Rights attorney Benjamin Crump\, and scholars including Ta-Nehisi Coates and Tina Campt\, Free Renty is a troubling look at the legacy of slavery and the lengths powerful institutions will go to avoid confronting the past\, as well as a stirring testimony to the courage of those determined to fight for the dignity and respect of their ancestors. \n\nDirector Biography \nDavid Grubin is a director\, writer\, producer\, and cinematographer who has produced films that range across history\, art\, poetry\, and science\, winning every award in the field of documentary television\, including two Alfred I. SUMMARY:MSPIFF @ the Capri: "Shaft" 7pm\, 5/12
DESCRIPTION:Post-film discussion featuring MSPIFF Programmer and filmmaker Craig Laurence Rice. \nWhen a Harlem mobster’s daughter is kidnapped by the Mafosi\, does he turn to the cops? Not when Shaft’s in town. Thrilling\, sexy\, and dangerous\, Gordon Parks’ action thriller ushered in the 70s Blaxploitation genre. Richard Roundtree is magnetic as Shaft and Isaac Hayes won an Oscar for the original song. \nThis is a movie that many long-time Northside residents may have seen when it originally played at the Capri back in the early ‘70s. The film is also a part of the MSPIFF41 Luminary Tribute to Gordon Parks which also includes screenings of The Learning Tree\, Leadbelly\, and Half Past Autumn. \n\nDirector Biography \nWhen speaking of Gordon Parks\, one could easily write an entire biography on his work as a pioneering Black photographer working with the New Deal government; or on his fiction\, non-fiction and poetry\, including The Learning Tree; or on his music\, including the scores for his own movies; or on his editorial work or his oil paintings. \nPhoto Courtesy The Gordon Parks Foundation \n\nAll Capri MSPIFF Events \nMSPIFF is Minnesota’s largest film festival and one of the longest-running film festivals in the country. DESCRIPTION:Director Kevin Shaw Attending \nLocated just south of downtown Chicago\, the National Teachers Academy Elementary School (NTA) is a high-achieving public school in an African American neighborhood. When the city announces plans to phase out NTA’s curriculum and turn it into a high school drawing students from other schools\, the community senses gentrification… and\, soon\, the fight for justice is on. \nThe NTA is the pride of its community\, receiving numerous accolades\, including Chicago’s top-ranking recognition for educational achievement and helping Black\, working-class children to achieve success. In 2017\, however\, residents from a nearby gentrifying neighborhood urged the city to turn NTA into a high school that would benefit their children. But NTA’s parents\, teachers\, administrators and students\, who have seen the city administration bypass their best interests for too long\, will have none of it. Kevin Shaw’s documentary is at once an infuriating and hopeful look at a Chicago school that will have you on edge of your seats until the final bell rings. \n\nAll Capri MSPIFF Events \nDirector Biography \nKevin Shaw is a director\, producer and cinematographer\, whose work has appeared on numerous major television networks. SUMMARY:MSPIFF @ the Capri: "Saloum" 7pm\, 5/11
DESCRIPTION:Bangui’s Hyenas are a fabled trio of mercenaries from Guinea-Bissau\, who strip a drug dealer of his enormous wealth and make a beeline for Dakar. There they get trapped in a near-mythical resort… and the blood is just beginning to flow in Jean Luc Herbulot’s kinetic thriller-horror hybrid. \nAmidst the chaos of a coup d’état\, Bangui’s Hyenas perform an almost perfect siege of a Mexican drug lord\, and flee with millions in drugs and gold. But when they find themselves stranded in the Sine-Saloum Delta\, a coastal river whose archipelago is seemingly filled with unearthly creatures\, the Hyenas find themselves\, and their weaponry\, at a distinct disadvantage. “Freely mixes and marries the cinematic languages of spaghetti Westerns\, samurai dramas and classic monster movies to tell an exciting and distinctly African story.” –Richard Kuipers\, Variety \nDIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY\n  \nJean Luc Herbulot was born in Pointe-Noire\, Republic of Congo and studied multimedia and film editing in Paris.
