Capri Glee! FAQs

I can’t sing. I would need lots more practice. Many people feel nervous about their singing at first. We encourage you to try anyway! You will be amazed at what our community and leaders, J.D. and Fred Steele, can bring out in you. To help with practice, some members like to record rehearsals on their phones so they can go over their parts at home.

I can’t read music. We learn everything together through listening and repetition. You do not need to read music, and we do not use sheet music or lyric sheets. This makes it easy for anyone to join, regardless of their background.

I’ve participated in Glee! before. Will the songs be different and do I need to register? Yes, please register for each session individually. Each season features a variety of music—including brand-new songs and familiar favorites with updated arrangements or gestures.

I’m an advanced singer. Good, we love having experienced singers in the group to lead by example. Our members learn from one another, and as a result, we end up sounding fantastic. J.D. and Fred Steele, bring out the “teacher” in everyone. It is very rewarding to see the progress we make together. We have a great mix of all four vocal parts: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. J.D. also uses special ear-training exercises that help us improve our vocal range and accuracy.

What kinds of songs are performed? Our music includes a mix of pop, soul, spirituals, and songs in many languages. We choose pieces that move the heart and lift the spirits of everyone in our audience.

What if I can’t make some of the rehearsals, for any reason? If you are feeling unwell, we encourage you to stay home and rest. While missing a rehearsal is acceptable, we recommend attending one of the final sessions before a concert to review the performance setlist. Please note that not all practiced material will be included in the final program. During the performance, our director will provide expert cues for lyrics and entrances to ensure everyone feels confident on stage.

I hear there’s socializing afterward. After our rehearsals, singers often gather at a nearby neighborhood establishment to socialize. Everyone is welcome to join! These gatherings are optional, and any personal purchases are on your own.

Is this just for Northside residents, or can anybody join? Capri Glee! serves as a bridge, connecting people from all over metro area to North Minneapolis and the joy of singing.

Is it really free to participate? There must be expenses, how is this funded? Capri Glee! is completely free for all participants.This program is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.We gratefully accept donations to support Capri Glee! at any time. If you choose to give, please indicate that your gift is “in honor of Capri Glee!”.
