How does a choreographer move through the intersection of his Black, Jewish, and Queer identities?
The Rimon Artist Salon Series concludes its fifteenth season with Dancing through Love and Loss: New Work by Adam W. McKinney.
McKinney will present his creative dance research on themes associated with Jewish and Queer practices of love and loss. Investigating the intersection of racism and anti-Semitism, the work-in-progress, created in collaboration with Daniel Banks, is set to nature sounds, Jazz, Jewish liturgical, and Yiddish music. As part of the interactive presentation, McKinney will engage viewers in thinking about the role of memory and social justice action.
Adam W. McKinney has mused about the work-in-progress, “In the Jewish calendar this is a Shmita year, a year of rest and release. It’s also a year in which my father died. I’ve asked myself, What does Shmita mean in terms of loss and ancestry? How does it translate in my own body and process into the experience of letting go? My goal for the new piece is to create a space that allows people to arrive and be in community, to participate in a community practice of art making.”
Adam W. McKinney is a dancer, choreographer, and community activist. He has danced with some of the world’s preeminent dance companies, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Béjart Ballet Lausanne (Switzerland), Alonzo King LINES Ballet, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, ZviDance, Buglisi/Foreman Dance, and Milwaukee Ballet Company.
Admission is $12 ($6 for ages 36 and under).
