Finding Our Way: A Story of the Minneapolis Sound explores the roots of the legendary Minneapolis Sound and the community that helped shape it.
This short documentary takes a look at the origins of what came to be known as the Minneapolis Sound. While Prince would eventually blaze the trail, he was only one of many gifted young musicians growing up in North Minneapolis during a time of civil unrest and cultural change. It started with neighborhood kids forming their own bands, rehearsing in basements and garages, driven by passion. But then came The Way Community Center that took that passion and gave it possibility. A community-built space born out of the civil unrest of the late 1960s in Minneapolis, The Way became a safe haven where young artists could develop their talent, find mentorship, and imagine a future beyond the challenges surrounding them. Through historical research and community voices, this short documentary uncovers how a grassroots movement in North Minneapolis helped create what the world would come to know as the Minneapolis Sound. It also explores present day civil unrest and if we could create another Way today.
